तम् कुमारम् ततो जातम् स इन्द्राः सह मरुद् गणाः ।
क्षीर संभावन अर्थाय कृत्तिकाः समयोजयन् ॥ ॥१-३७-२३॥
tam kumāram tato jātam sa indrāḥ saha marud gaṇāḥ । kṣīra saṃbhāvana arthāya kṛttikāḥ samayojayan ॥ ॥1-37-23॥
Translation
Upon the birth of that Kumara (boy), Indra, accompanied by the Maruts, engaged the Krittikas to nurse him with milk.

उस कुमार (कार्तिकेय) के उत्पन्न होने पर, मरुद्गणों सहित इन्द्र ने उसे दूध पिलाने के लिए कृत्तिकाओं को नियुक्त किया।
English Commentary
This verse marks the immediate post-birth intervention by the celestial hierarchy. Indra, the King of Gods, along with the Maruts (storm gods), arranges for the sustenance of the newborn warrior. The choice of the 'Krittikas' (the Pleiades constellation) is crucial; ordinary beings could not withstand the energy of a child born of Shiva's heat and incubated in a golden forest. The phrase 'kṣīra saṃbhāvana arthāya' (for the purpose of providing milk) indicates that while the child was born of divine energy, his physical manifestation required nurturing. It underscores the collaborative effort of the cosmos in raising the future commander of the god's army.

यह श्लोक देवताओं की रणनीतिक तत्परता को दर्शाता है। कुमार का जन्म एक विशेष उद्देश्य (तारकासुर वध) के लिए हुआ था, अतः उनके संरक्षण और पोषण की तत्काल व्यवस्था की गई। इन्द्र और मरुद्गणों (पवन देवताओं) का स्वयं आना इस बालक के महत्व को रेखांकित करता है। 'कृत्तिकाः' नक्षत्र-देवियाँ हैं, जिन्हें धात्री (nurse) के रूप में चुना गया। यह चयन इसलिए भी महत्वपूर्ण है क्योंकि अग्नि (तेज) से उत्पन्न बालक को साधारण माताएँ धारण या पोषित नहीं कर सकती थीं; केवल दिव्य नक्षत्र-देवियाँ ही उस तेजपुंज को स्तनपान कराने में सक्षम थीं। 'क्षीर संभावन अर्थाय' का अर्थ है दूध की व्यवस्था या पुष्टि के लिए।
