Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
तयोः तत् वचनम् श्रुत्वा भृगुः परमधार्मिकः ।
उवाच परमाम् वाणीम् स्वच्छन्दो अत्र विधीयताम् ॥ ॥१-३८-११॥
tayoḥ tat vacanam śrutvā bhṛguḥ paramadhārmikaḥ । uvāca paramām vāṇīm svacchando atra vidhīyatām ॥ ॥1-38-11॥
Translation
Hearing those words of the two queens, the extremely righteous Bhrigu spoke these excellent words: "Let your own free will be exercised here."

उन दोनों (रानियों) के उस वचन को सुनकर, परम धार्मिक भृगु ने यह श्रेष्ठ बात कही: "यहाँ तुम अपनी इच्छा के अनुसार चयन करो।"
English Commentary
This verse underscores the magnanimity and impartiality of Sage Bhrigu. Despite his power to ordain destiny, he empowers the queens to exercise their agency ('svacchanda'—free will) in choosing their progeny. By offering the choice, the sage ensures that the mothers are active participants in their destiny rather than passive recipients. The term 'paramadharmika' (supremely righteous) implies that allowing them this choice is in accordance with Dharma. It suggests a respect for individual desire and capacity. The sage provides the options, but the specific path of the lineage is left to human discretion, highlighting the interplay between divine grace and human choice.

इस श्लोक में ऋषि भृगु की उदारता और निष्पक्षता दर्शायी गई है। यद्यपि वे वरदान देने वाले समर्थ ऋषि हैं, परन्तु वे अपना निर्णय थोपने के बजाय माताओं को चयन का अधिकार ('स्वच्छन्दो') देते हैं। 'परमधार्मिकः' विशेषण यह बताता है कि ऋषि धर्म के सूक्ष्म सिद्धांतों को जानते हैं—संतान के स्वभाव और संख्या का निर्णय उन माताओं पर छोड़ना ही उचित है जो उन्हें धारण करेंगी। यह प्रसंग भारतीय दर्शन में 'प्रारब्ध' और 'पुरुषार्थ' (स्वतंत्र इच्छा) के बीच के संतुलन को भी दर्शाता है। ऋषि ने वरदान (भाग्य) उपलब्ध कराया, लेकिन उसका स्वरूप (एक या अनेक) चुनने की स्वतंत्रता पात्र (रानियों) को दी।
