एको वंश करो वा अस्तु बहवो वा महाबलाः ।
कीर्तिमन्तो महोत्साहाः का वा कम् वरम् इच्छति ॥ ॥१-३८-१२॥
eko vaṃśa karo vā astu bahavo vā mahābalāḥ । kīrtimanto mahotsāhāḥ kā vā kam varam icchati ॥ ॥1-38-12॥
Translation
"May there be one who perpetuates the lineage, or many who are mighty, famous, and full of great enthusiasm—which of you desires which boon?"

English Commentary
Bhrigu explicitly delineates the trade-off involved in the boons. The first option is stability and continuity ('vamsha karo'—perpetuator of the dynasty). The second option is raw power, fame, and numerical strength ('bahavo mahabalah'). The adjective 'mahotsahah' (great enthusiasm/energy) applied to the many sons is double-edged; while it implies vigor, in the context of the Sagara legend, it foreshadows the reckless energy that leads to their destruction. The choice represents a classic dichotomy: the singular focus of Dharma needed to sustain a kingdom versus the expansive, aggressive power often desired for conquest. The queens must now weigh dynastic duty against the allure of power.
