अथ काले गते तस्मिन् ज्येष्ठा पुत्रम् व्यजायत ।
असमंज इति ख्यातम् केशिनी सगरात्मजम् ॥ ॥१-३८-१६॥
atha kāle gate tasmin jyeṣṭhā putram vyajāyata । asamaṃja iti khyātam keśinī sagarātmajam ॥ ॥1-38-16॥
Translation
Then, after the due time had passed, the eldest wife Keshini gave birth to Sagara's son, who became known as Asamanja.

तदनंतर (गर्भ का) समय पूरा होने पर, ज्येष्ठ पत्नी केशिनी ने सगर के पुत्र को जन्म दिया जो 'असमंज' नाम से विख्यात हुआ।
English Commentary
Keshini gives birth to her son after the appropriate gestation period. The son is named 'Asamanja.' The name itself is ominous; linguistically, it can imply someone who is 'unseemly' or 'improper' (a-samanja). This foreshadows his behavior. Despite the boon being for a 'lineage perpetuator,' the immediate son turns out to be a tormentor of the people. This illustrates a recurring theme in epics: the boon grants the technical request (a son who continues the biological line), but the moral quality of that individual is subject to other factors. Asamanja becomes the biological link to the future saviors of the clan (Anshuman, Bhagiratha), fulfilling the technicality of the boon.
