Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
सम्मतः सर्व लोकस्य सर्वस्य अपि प्रियम् वदः ।
ततः कालेन महता मतिः समभिजायत ॥ ॥१-३८-२३॥
sammataḥ sarva lokasya sarvasya api priyam vadaḥ । tataḥ kālena mahatā matiḥ samabhijāyata ॥ ॥1-38-23॥
Translation
He (Anshuman) was accepted by all the world and spoke pleasantly to everyone. Then, after a long time, a thought arose (in Sagara's mind).

वह (अंशुमान) सभी लोगों द्वारा सम्मानित था और सबसे प्रिय बोलने वाला था। तदनंतर, बहुत समय बीतने पर (सगर के मन में) विचार उत्पन्न हुआ।
English Commentary
Anshuman is characterized as the polar opposite of his father. He is 'priyam vadah' (pleasant-spoken) and respected by all, restoring the bond between the royal house and the subjects. Once domestic stability is regained through Anshuman's virtue, the narrative shifts. King Sagara, now aging, turns his mind toward a grand spiritual and political ambition. The 'thought' that arises is the desire to perform a Yajna (sacrifice), specifically the Ashvamedha, to validate his sovereignty and acquire spiritual merit, setting the stage for the climactic events of the epic.

अंशुमान का चरित्र चित्रण यहाँ पूर्ण होता है। वह अपने पिता के ठीक विपरीत 'सर्व लोकस्य सम्मतः' (सब लोगों का चहेता) और 'प्रियम् वदः' (मधुर भाषी) है। यह गुण उसे राज्य का उत्तराधिकारी बनने योग्य बनाते हैं। श्लोक का दूसरा भाग एक नए प्रसंग का आरंभ करता है। 'कालेन महता' (लंबे समय बाद) सगर के मन में एक नया विचार आया। जीवन के उत्तरार्ध में, सांसारिक और पारिवारिक स्थिति स्थिर होने के बाद, राजा अब पारलौकिक और साम्राज्य विस्तार के वैदिक मार्ग, यानी यज्ञ की ओर उन्मुख हो रहे हैं।
