वैदर्भ दुहिता राम केशिनी नाम नामतः ।
ज्येष्ठा सगर पत्नी सा धर्मिष्ठा सत्य वादिनी ॥ ॥१-३८-३॥
vaidarbha duhitā rāma keśinī nāma nāmataḥ । jyeṣṭhā sagara patnī sā dharmiṣṭhā satya vādinī ॥ ॥1-38-3॥
Translation
O Rama! The daughter of the King of Vidarbha, known by the name Keshini, was the eldest wife of Sagara. She was very righteous and a speaker of truth.

हे राम! विदर्भ नरेश की पुत्री, जिनका नाम केशिनी था, सगर की ज्येष्ठ पत्नी थीं। वह अत्यंत धर्मपरायण और सत्य बोलने वाली थीं।
English Commentary
Vishvamitra introduces Keshini, the senior consort of King Sagara. She is identified by her patrilineage as the princess of Vidarbha. The sage emphasizes her moral stature with the adjectives 'dharmishtha' (devoted to Dharma) and 'satya vadini' (truth-speaker). These are not merely ornamental epithets; they establish her spiritual eligibility to participate in the severe austerities Sagara is about to undertake. In the context of the story, Keshini represents the stability of the lineage. As the 'Jyeshtha' (eldest) queen, her role is pivotal. The specific mention of her virtues serves to validate the purity of the lineage that will eventually lead to Bhagiratha and the descent of the Ganga, reinforcing that the vessel of birth (the mother) must be spiritually pure.
