यावत् तुरग संदर्शः तावत् खनत मेदिनीम्।
तम् एव हय हर्तारम् मार्गमाणा मम आज्ञया॥ ॥१-३९-१४॥
Yāvat turaga saṃdarśaḥ tāvat khanata medinīm। Tam eva haya hartāram mārgamāṇā mama ājñayā॥ ॥1-39-14॥
Translation
"By my command, while searching for the stealer of the horse, dig up the earth (Medini) until the horse is sighted."

"मेरी आज्ञा से उस घोड़ा चुराने वाले को ढूँढते हुए, जब तक घोड़ा दिखाई न दे, तब तक पृथ्वी (मेदिनी) को खोद डालो।"
English Commentary
This is the pivot point of the Sagara legend. The command Khanata medinīm (Dig the Earth) changes the geography of the world in Hindu cosmology. The urgency to find the horse overrides ecological or geological sanctity. Sagara asserts his absolute authority with Mama ājñayā (By my command). This instruction transforms a search mission into a massive excavation project. It reflects the desperate resolve of the King to complete the Yajna, justifying extreme measures against nature itself to uphold his royal and religious pledge.

यह रामायण का एक निर्णायक क्षण है। 'खनत मेदिनीम्' (पृथ्वी को खोदो) का आदेश ही वह कारण बनता है जिससे 'सागर' (समुद्र) का विस्तार और नामकरण हुआ। सगर का क्रोध और हताशा इस आदेश में झलकती है—उन्हें घोड़ा हर हाल में चाहिए, भले ही इसके लिए धरती का सीना चीरना पड़े। 'मम आज्ञया' (मेरी आज्ञा से) कहकर वे इस विनाशकारी कार्य का पूरा उत्तरदायित्व अपने ऊपर लेते हैं। यह शक्ति का प्रदर्शन भी है और अहंकार का भी, जिसके परिणाम अक्सर गंभीर होते हैं।
