एवम् पर्वत संबाधम् जम्बू द्वीपम् नृपात्मजाः ।
खनन्तो नृपशार्दूल सर्वतः परिचक्रमुः ॥ ॥१-३९-२१॥
evam parvata saṃbādham jambū dvīpam nṛpātmajāḥ । khananto nṛpaśārdūla sarvataḥ paricakramuḥ ॥ ॥1-39-21॥
Translation
O Tiger among kings! Digging in this manner, the princes went all around the entire Jambudvipa, which is crowded with mountains.

हे नृपशार्दूल (राजर्षि)! पर्वतों से भरे हुए इस पूरे जम्बूद्वीप को इस प्रकार खोदते हुए उन राजकुमारों ने चारों ओर भ्रमण किया (पूरे द्वीप को खोद डाला)।
English Commentary
The scope of destruction expands to cover the entire Jambudvipa, the central continent in Puranic cosmography where human civilization resides. The descriptor parvata saṃbādham (congested/filled with mountains) emphasizes the difficulty of the task; they didn't just dig soft soil but tore through mountainous terrain. The term nṛpaśārdūla (tiger among kings) is an address to Rama, invoking his warrior nature to understand the martial prowess involved. However, unlike Rama’s righteous use of power, Sagara's sons used theirs for chaos. Circling and digging the entire continent signifies a total loss of patience and wisdom, turning the search for a sacred horse into a desecration of the habitable world.

जम्बूद्वीप प्राचीन भारतीय भूगोल के अनुसार पृथ्वी के सात द्वीपों में से केंद्रीय द्वीप है, जिसमें भारतवर्ष भी सम्मिलित है। श्लोक बताता है कि यह द्वीप 'पर्वत संबाधम्' (पर्वतों से भरा हुआ) है, अर्थात यहाँ की भूमि पथरीली और कठिन थी। इसके बावजूद, सगर के पुत्रों ने इसे खोद डाला। 'सर्वतः परिचक्रमुः' का अर्थ है कि उन्होंने कोई भी कोना नहीं छोड़ा। यह उनकी उन्मत्त अवस्था को दर्शाता है। उन्होंने केवल मिट्टी नहीं खोदी, बल्कि पर्वतों की जड़ों को भी हिला दिया। यह विनाश किसी एक स्थान तक सीमित नहीं था, बल्कि सर्वव्यापी (global) था। यह कार्य अब खोज से हटकर पूर्ण विनाश की ओर बढ़ रहा था, जिससे समस्त सृष्टि में त्राहि-त्राहि मच गई।
