ते प्रसाद्य महात्मानम् विषण्ण वदनाः तदा ।
ऊचुः परम संत्रस्ताः पितामहम् इदम् वचः ॥ ॥१-३९-२३॥
te prasādya mahātmānam viṣaṇṇa vadanāḥ tadā । ūcuḥ parama saṃtrastāḥ pitāmaham idam vacaḥ ॥ ॥1-39-23॥
Translation
Having propitiated the High-souled One (Brahma), those beings, with sorrowful faces and greatly terrified, spoke these words to the Grandfather.
English Commentary
This verse describes the demeanor of the celestial delegation. Their faces are viṣaṇṇa (despondent/melancholy), reflecting the gravity of the crisis. They are parama saṃtrastāḥ (extremely terrorized), emphasizing that the sons of Sagara have become a threat comparable to major demons. Before speaking, they propitiate (prasādya) Brahma, following the protocol of approaching a superior. The contrast between the Mahātma (Great Soul/Brahma), who remains calm, and the terrified petitioners sets the stage for a revelation of higher wisdom. It illustrates that even powerful beings like Devas and Asuras have limits and must seek refuge in the Creator when faced with overwhelming chaotic energy (tamas/rajas).

देवताओं की स्थिति अत्यंत दयनीय है। वे 'विषण्ण वदनाः' (मुरझाए हुए चेहरों वाले) और 'परम संत्रस्ताः' (अत्यंत डरे हुए) हैं। यह भय सगर के पुत्रों की विध्वंसक क्षमता का प्रमाण है। ब्रह्मा जी के पास पहुँचकर उन्होंने पहले उन्हें 'प्रसाद्य' (प्रसन्न/स्तुति) किया, जो वैदिक शिष्टाचार है—बड़ों से निवेदन करने से पहले उनका सम्मान करना आवश्यक है। 'महात्मानम्' शब्द ब्रह्मा जी की विशालता और स्थिरता को दर्शाता है, जो देवताओं की घबराहट के विपरीत है। यह श्लोक उस वातावरण का निर्माण करता है जहाँ एक गंभीर शिकायत दर्ज कराई जा रही है। यह दृश्य शरणागति का है, जहाँ शक्तिहीन महसूस कर रहे देवता सर्वोच्च सत्ता से न्याय की गुहार लगा रहे हैं।
