भगवन् पृथिवी सर्वा खन्यते सगर आत्मजैः ।
बहवः च महात्मानो वध्यन्ते जल चारिणः ॥ ॥१-३९-२४॥
bhagavan pṛthivī sarvā khanyate sagara ātmajaiḥ । bahavaḥ ca mahātmāno vadhyante jala cāriṇaḥ ॥ ॥1-39-24॥
Translation
(They said): O Lord! The entire earth is being dug up by the sons of Sagara. Many great souls and aquatic beings are being killed in the process.

(उन्होंने कहा): हे भगवन! सगर के पुत्र पूरी पृथ्वी को खोद रहे हैं। इसके कारण बहुत से महात्मा (शक्तिशाली जीव) और जल में रहने वाले प्राणी मारे जा रहे हैं।
English Commentary
Here, the Devas present their case. They address Brahma as Bhagavan (The Adorable/Opulent Lord). Their report is factual yet urgent: the earth is being excavated (khanyate) by Sagara's sons. They highlight the loss of life, specifically noting jala cāriṇaḥ (water-dwellers/aquatic beings) and referring to the victims as mahātmāno (great souls/beings of significance). This suggests that the sons of Sagara are not just killing insects or worms, but sentient, powerful beings of the underworld. The use of the passive voice vadhyante (are being killed) stresses the helplessness of the victims.
