चतुर्विंशत्सहस्राणि श्लोकानामुक्तवानृषिः ।
तथा सर्गशतान्पञ्च षट्काण्डानि तथोत्तरम् ॥१-४-२॥

The Sage (Valmiki) composed twenty-four thousand verses, five hundred chapters (sargas), and six Kandas (books) along with the Uttara Kanda.

उन महर्षि (वाल्मीकि) ने चौबीस हजार श्लोक, पांच सौ सर्ग तथा छः काण्ड और (सातवां) उत्तरकाण्ड रचा।

This verse provides the definitive structural statistics of the Epic as composed by Sage Valmiki. It quantifies the text at twenty-four thousand verses and five hundred chapters (Sargas). Crucially, the distinction 'Six Kandas and the Uttara' suggests that while the six books (Bala to Yuddha) form the core narrative arc, the Uttara Kanda acts as the conclusion or appendix, yet both are explicitly attributed to the same Rishi. This serves as internal evidence for the authenticity of the Uttara Kanda. Esoterically, the number 24,000 is of immense spiritual significance. It corresponds to the 24 syllables of the Gayatri Mantra.
