Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
जटाबन्धनम् अन्यः तु काष्ठ रज्जुम् मुदान्वितः ।
यज्ञ भाण्डम् ऋषिः कश्चित् काष्ठभारम् तथा परः ॥१-४-२४॥
jaṭābandhanam anyaḥ tu kāṣṭha rajjum mudānvitaḥ |
yajña bhāṇḍam ṛṣiḥ kaścit kāṣṭhabhāram tathā paraḥ ॥1-4-24॥
Translation
Another, filled with joy, gave a cord for tying matted hair, and someone else gave a rope for binding wood. A certain sage gave a sacrificial vessel, and another bestowed a bundle of firewood.

किसी अन्य (ऋषि) ने प्रसन्नतापूर्वक जटा बाँधने की डोरी दी और किसी ने लकड़ी बाँधने की रज्जु प्रदान की। किसी ऋषि ने यज्ञ का पात्र (यज्ञ-भाण्ड) दिया, तो किसी दूसरे ने लकड़ियों का भार (समिधा का गट्ठर) भेंट किया।
English Commentary
This verse underscores the simplicity and sincerity of the gifts bestowed by the sages. The items mentioned—cords for hair or wood, sacrificial vessels, and bundles of firewood—might appear trivial in a material sense, but they represent the true wealth of the forest. The gift of 'kāṣṭhabhāram' (a bundle of firewood) is particularly significant. For a hermit, gathering wood requires time and physical labor, and it is crucial for maintaining the sacred fire. By gifting a bundle of wood, a sage is essentially donating his labor and a resource vital for spiritual sustenance. It signifies that the sages were so moved by the recitation that they wished to facilitate the boys' participation in the sacred rituals, sharing with them the very fuel of their ascetic life. The phrase 'mudānvitaḥ' (filled with joy) emphasizes that these humble offerings were made with a full and happy heart.
