Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
तस्य चिन्तयामानस्य महर्षेर्भावितात्मनः ।
अगृह्णीतां ततः पादौ मुनिवेषौ कुशीलवौ ॥१-४-४॥
tasya cintayāmānasya maharṣerbhāvitātmanaḥ |
agṛhṇītāṃ tataḥ pādau muniveṣau kuśīlavau ॥1-4-4॥
Translation
While that high-souled Great Sage (Valmiki) was thus reflecting, Kusa and Lava, clad in the attire of ascetics, touched his feet (in reverence).

जब वे शुद्ध अन्तःकरण वाले महर्षि (वाल्मीकि) इस प्रकार विचार कर रहे थे, तभी मुनि के वेष में (राजकुमार) कुश और लव ने आकर उनके चरणों का स्पर्श किया (वंदना की)।
English Commentary
This verse signifies a moment of divine synchronicity. Just as the purified Sage ('Bhavitatmanah' - one of cleansed soul) was contemplating who could possibly carry the weight of this epic, Kusa and Lava appeared and reverently touched his feet. The term 'Muniveshau' (in the guise of ascetics) is poignant; although they were princes of the solar dynasty by birth, they were raised in the hermitage and wore the simple attire of rishis. Their arrival provided the immediate answer to Valmiki's reflection. It illustrates the magnetic relationship between a Guru and worthy disciples—when the knowledge is ready, the deserving recipients appear. These two brothers, Kusa and Lava, were thus destined to be the first bards of the Ramayana.

यह श्लोक एक दैवीय संयोग को दर्शाता है। जब महर्षि वाल्मीकि चिंता में मग्न थे कि इस महान ग्रंथ का गायन कौन करेगा, ठीक उसी समय कुश और लव ने आकर उन्हें प्रणाम किया। यहाँ वाल्मीकि जी के लिए 'भावितात्मनः' (शुद्ध और एकाग्र चित्त वाले) विशेषण का प्रयोग किया गया है। कुश और लव, जो वास्तव में श्रीराम के पुत्र थे, 'मुनिवेषौ' (तपस्वी के वेश) में थे क्योंकि उनका लालन-पालन वन में हुआ था। उनका आगमन महर्षि के प्रश्न का स्वतःस्फूर्त उत्तर बन गया। यह गुरु-शिष्य परंपरा का एक आदर्श उदाहरण है, जहाँ सुयोग्य शिष्य विद्या ग्रहण करने के लिए सही समय पर गुरु के समक्ष उपस्थित होते हैं। 'कुशीलवौ' शब्द का प्रयोग यहाँ दोनों भाइयों के लिए किया गया है, जो आगे चलकर इस महाकाव्य के प्रथम गायक बने।
