पितुर् वचनम् आसाद्य सगरस्य महात्मनः ।
षष्टिः पुत्र सहस्राणि रसातलम् अभिद्रवन् ॥ ॥१-४०-१२॥
pitur vacanam āsādya sagarasya mahātmanaḥ । ṣaṣṭiḥ putra sahasrāṇi rasātalam abhidravan ॥ ॥1-40-12॥
Translation
Accepting the command of their father, the high-souled Sagara, those sixty thousand sons rushed towards the Rasatala (the subterranean regions).
हिंदी अनुवाद
महात्मा सागर के वचनों को स्वीकार कर (शिरोधार्य कर), उनके साठ हजार पुत्र रसातल की ओर दौड़ पड़े (पाताल की ओर प्रस्थान किया)।
English Commentary
This verse highlights the ideal of filial obedience (pitru-vakya-paripalana). King Sagara is described as mahatmanah (high-souled), indicating the righteousness of his command. The sixty thousand sons, without hesitation or question, accepted their father's directive to search the subterranean realms (Rasatala). The verb abhidravan (rushed/ran towards) suggests their eagerness and collective unity in fulfilling this mission. This descent is pivotal, as their excavation sets the stage for the eventual need for the descent of the River Ganga to salvage their souls.

इस श्लोक में पितृभक्ति और आज्ञापालन का आदर्श प्रस्तुत किया गया है। राजा सगर, जो 'महात्मा' विशेषण से विभूषित हैं, का आदेश उनके पुत्रों के लिए सर्वोपरि है। यद्यपि रसातल का मार्ग अज्ञात और संकटपूर्ण हो सकता था, तथापि साठ हजार पुत्रों ने एक स्वर में, बिना किसी प्रश्न के, पिता की आज्ञा का पालन किया। यहाँ 'अभिद्रवन्' शब्द का प्रयोग उनके उत्साह और तत्परता को दर्शाता है। यह यात्रा केवल भौतिक खुदाई नहीं, बल्कि अश्वमेध के घोड़े की खोज में पृथ्वी के गर्भ तक जाने का एक साहसिक अभियान था, जो अंततः गंगा अवतरण की पृष्ठभूमि तैयार करता है।
