Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
महा पद्मम् महात्मानम् सुमहा पर्वतोपमम् ।
शिरसा धारयंतम् गाम् विस्मयम् जग्मुर् उत्तमम् ॥ ॥१-४०-१८॥
mahā padmam mahātmānam sumahā parvatopamam । śirasā dhārayantam gām vismayam jagmur uttamam ॥ ॥1-40-18॥
Translation
They saw the high-souled Mahapadma, resembling a huge mountain, supporting the earth on his head, and they were struck with great amazement.
हिंदी अनुवाद
उन्होंने (वहाँ) महापद्म नामक विशाल शरीर वाले (महात्मा) और महान पर्वत के समान गज को अपने सिर पर पृथ्वी को धारण किए हुए देखा और अत्यंत विस्मित हुए।
English Commentary
The guardian elephant of the South is identified here as 'Mahapadma'. He is described with heavy honorifics like mahatmanam (high-souled or colossal nature) and sumaha parvatopamam (resembling a very great mountain). Seeing him holding the earth (gam) on his head, the sons were struck with uttamam vismayam (supreme amazement). Even though they had already seen Virupaksha, the sight of Mahapadma was sufficiently majestic to evoke fresh awe, highlighting the terrifying grandeur of these cosmic entities hidden beneath the surface.

दक्षिण दिशा के दिग्पाल का नाम 'महापद्म' है। यहाँ उसे 'महात्मानम्' (विशाल स्वरूप वाला या महान आत्मा वाला) और 'सुमहा पर्वतोपमम्' (अत्यंत विशाल पर्वत समान) कहा गया है। सगर के पुत्र उसे देखकर 'विस्मयम् जग्मुर् उत्तमम्' (परम आश्चर्य को प्राप्त हुए)। यद्यपि उन्होंने पूर्व में विरूपाक्ष को देखा था, फिर भी महापद्म का तेज और विशालता उन्हें पुनः विस्मित करने के लिए पर्याप्त थी। 'गाम्' शब्द पृथ्वी का वाचक है। यह श्लोक दिग्गजों के भव्य स्वरूप और उनके द्वारा किए जा रहे अलौकिक कार्य के प्रति मानवीय विस्मय को रेखांकित करता है।
