यस्य इयम् वसुधा कृत्स्ना वासुदेवस्य धीमतः ।
महिषी माधवस्य एषा स एव भगवन् प्रभुः ॥ ॥१-४०-२॥
yasya iyam vasudhā kṛtsnā vāsudevasya dhīmataḥ । mahiṣī mādhavasya eṣā sa eva bhagavan prabhuḥ ॥ ॥1-40-2॥
Translation
This entire earth belongs to the wise Vasudeva (Lord Vishnu). She is the consort (Mahishi) of Madhava, and He alone is her Lord and Master.

यह सम्पूर्ण वसुधा (पृथ्वी) उन परम बुद्धिमान वासुदेव (भगवान विष्णु) की है। यह पृथ्वी माधव की महिषी (पत्नी) है और वे ही इसके भगवान और प्रभु (स्वामी) हैं।
English Commentary
Brahma reassures the terrified Devas by invoking the supreme authority of Lord Vishnu (Vasudeva). He explains that the Earth is not ownerless; she is the Mahiṣī (Queen Consort) of Madhava (Vishnu). In Vaishnava theology, Bhudevi (Earth) is the wife of Vishnu. Therefore, any aggression against her is an aggression against the Supreme Lord himself. By emphasizing that He is the Prabhu (Master), Brahma implies that the Protector is aware and watching. The sons of Sagara are not merely digging soil; they are assaulting the divine consort, and their doom is guaranteed by the very owner of the cosmos. This establishes the theological justification for the impending divine retribution.

ब्रह्मा जी यहाँ देवताओं के भय को दूर करने के लिए एक परम सत्य का उद्घाटन कर रहे हैं। वे बताते हैं कि पृथ्वी कोई अनाथ वस्तु नहीं है जिसे सगर के पुत्र नष्ट कर सकें। पृथ्वी 'वासुदेव' (विष्णु) की संपत्ति और 'माधव' की पत्नी (महिषी) है। पौराणिक मान्यताओं में पृथ्वी को 'भूदेवी' कहा गया है, जो विष्णु की पत्नी हैं। जब कोई किसी की पत्नी या संपत्ति को हानि पहुँचाता है, तो उसका स्वामी उसकी रक्षा अवश्य करता है। 'धीमतः' (बुद्धिमान) विशेषण यह दर्शाता है कि विष्णु सब कुछ जानते हैं और सही समय पर हस्तक्षेप करेंगे। यह श्लोक आश्वस्त करता है कि सगर के पुत्रों का विनाश निश्चित है क्योंकि उन्होंने स्वयं नारायण की पत्नी पर प्रहार किया है।
