पश्चिमायाम् अपि दिशि महांतम् अचलोपमम् ।
दिशा गजम् सौमनसम् ददृशुः ते महा बलाः ॥ ॥१-४०-२०॥
paścimāyām api diśi mahāntam acalopamam । diśā gajam saumanasam dadṛśuḥ te mahā balāḥ ॥ ॥1-40-20॥
Translation
In the western quarter too, those mighty ones saw the elephant of that quarter, named Saumanasa, who was huge and looked like a mountain.
हिंदी अनुवाद
पश्चिम दिशा में भी उन महाबलशाली पुत्रों ने पर्वत (अचल) के समान विशाल 'सौमनस' नामक दिग्गज को देखा।
English Commentary
Upon excavating the West, the sons encountered the third directional elephant, named 'Saumanasa'. The descriptor acalopamam (mountain-like) appears again, reinforcing the theme of stability and immense mass required to hold the earth. The sons themselves are described here as maha balah (mighty ones), acknowledging the superhuman strength required to excavate the entire globe. Saumanasa represents the guardian force of the western quadrant, continuing the revelation of the hidden cosmic architecture supporting the world.

पश्चिम दिशा में पहुँचकर उन्हें तीसरा दिग्गज मिला, जिसका नाम 'सौमनस' है। यहाँ हाथियों के लिए बार-बार 'अचलोपमम्' (पर्वत के समान) विशेषण का प्रयोग उनकी स्थिरता को दिखाने के लिए किया गया है। सगर के पुत्रों के लिए यहाँ 'महाबलाः' (महाबलशाली) शब्द का प्रयोग हुआ है, जो यह दर्शाता है कि इतना श्रम साध्य कार्य—पूरी पृथ्वी को खोदना—केवल साधारण मनुष्यों का काम नहीं था, बल्कि वे असाधारण शक्ति से संपन्न थे। सौमनस पश्चिम दिशा का रक्षक है और ब्रह्मांडीय संतुलन में अपनी भूमिका निभा रहा है।
