उत्तरस्याम् रघुश्रेष्ठ ददृशुर् हिम पाण्डुरम् ।
भद्रम् भद्रेण वपुषा धारयंतम् महीम् इमाम् ॥ ॥१-४०-२२॥
uttarasyām raghuśreṣṭha dadṛśur hima pāṇḍuram । bhadram bhadreṇa vapuṣā dhārayantam mahīm imām ॥ ॥1-40-22॥
Translation
O best of the Raghus! In the northern quarter, they saw the elephant named Bhadra, white like snow, supporting this earth with his auspicious body.

हे रघुश्रेष्ठ! उत्तर दिशा में उन्होंने 'भद्र' नामक दिग्गज को देखा, जो बर्फ के समान श्वेत (पाण्डुर) था और अपने कल्याणकारी (भद्र) शरीर से इस पृथ्वी को धारण किए हुए था।
English Commentary
The sons reach the northern quarter, presided over by the directional elephant 'Bhadra'. He is described as hima panduram (white as snow), fitting for the direction associated with the Himalayas and the purity of the north. The verse plays on the word 'Bhadra', using it as both his proper name and an adjective describing his body (vapusha) as auspicious. This completes the circumambulation of the cardinal directions, establishing the cosmic geography before the narrative shifts to the fateful encounter in the northeast.
