Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
समालभ्य ततः सर्वे कृत्वा च एनम् प्रदक्षिणम् ।
षष्टिः पुत्र सहस्राणि बिभिदुर् वसुधा तलम् ॥ ॥१-४०-२३॥
samālabhya tataḥ sarve kṛtvā ca enam pradakṣiṇam । ṣaṣṭiḥ putra sahasrāṇi bibhidur vasudhā talam ॥ ॥1-40-23॥
Translation
Then, having reverently touched him and circumambulated him, all those sixty thousand sons continued to excavate the earth's surface.
हिंदी अनुवाद
उन सभी साठ हजार पुत्रों ने उस (भद्र) को आदरपूर्वक स्पर्श किया, उसकी परिक्रमा की, और फिर (पुनः) पृथ्वी तल को खोदना आरम्भ किया।
English Commentary
Even after checking all four cardinal points and paying homage to the guardians (indicated by samalabhya—touching with reverence), the sons did not find the horse. Undeterred, they resumed excavating (bibhidur). This moment marks a transition from a directed search of the quarters to a desperate, deeper piercing of the earth. Their persistence highlights their loyalty to their father's command, even as it pushes them blindly toward their doom.

चारों दिशाओं के दिग्गजों का दर्शन करने के बाद भी जब यज्ञ का अश्व नहीं मिला, तो सगर के पुत्रों ने हार नहीं मानी। 'समालभ्य' का अर्थ है आदरपूर्वक स्पर्श करना। यह शब्द उनकी श्रद्धा को प्रकट करता है। दिग्गजों का आशीर्वाद लेने के बाद, उन्होंने अपनी खुदाई (बिभिदुर्) जारी रखी। यह श्लोक कथा में एक 'तनाव' (tension) पैदा करता है—सारे लौकिक स्थान छान मारे गए हैं, अब वे उन अज्ञात गहराइयों में जा रहे हैं जहाँ सामान्य मनुष्यों की पहुँचना नहीं होती।
