Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
ततः प्राक् उत्तराम् गत्वा सागराः प्रथिताम् दिशम् ।
रोषात् अभ्यखनन् सर्वे पृथिवीम् सगर आत्मजाः ॥ ॥१-४०-२४॥
tataḥ prāk uttarām gatvā sāgarāḥ prathitām diśam । roṣāt abhyakhanan sarve pṛthivīm sagara ātmajāḥ ॥ ॥1-40-24॥
Translation
Then, the sons of Sagara went towards the famous North-East direction (Ishana) and, filled with anger, dug into the earth.

तदनंतर, सागर के वे पुत्र (सागराः) प्रसिद्ध 'ईशान कोण' (पूर्व-उत्तर दिशा) की ओर गए और रोष (क्रोध) में भरकर पृथ्वी को खोदने लगे।
English Commentary
Having failed in the cardinal directions, they turn to the Prak-uttaram (North-East), known as the Ishana cone. In Vedic tradition, this is a highly sacred direction associated with divinity and Shiva. However, the text notes they dug roshat (out of anger). This shift in temperament—from the respectful circumambulation of the elephants to blind rage—signals a spiritual decline. Their aggression in a sacred zone sets the stage for their catastrophic confrontation with the divine sage.

जब चारों दिशाओं में घोड़ा नहीं मिला, तो वे 'प्राक् उत्तराम्' (पूर्व और उत्तर के बीच, यानी ईशान कोण) की ओर मुड़े। भारतीय वास्तु और अध्यात्म में ईशान कोण देवताओं और शिव का स्थान माना जाता है। यहाँ 'रोषात्' (क्रोध से) शब्द अत्यंत महत्वपूर्ण है। उनकी मानसिक स्थिति अब भक्ति से हटकर हताशा और क्रोध में बदल गई है। यह क्रोध ही उनके विनाश का कारण बनेगा। पवित्र दिशा में क्रोध के साथ प्रवेश करने से आने वाले अमंगल का संकेत है।
