Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
ते तम् हय हरम् ज्ञात्वा क्रोध पर्याकुल ईक्षणाः ।
खनित्र लांगला धर नाना वृक्ष शिला धराः ॥ ॥१-४०-२७॥
te tam haya haram jñātvā krodha paryākula īkṣaṇāḥ । khanitra lāṅgalā dhara nānā vṛkṣa śilā dharāḥ ॥ ॥1-40-27॥
Translation
Knowing (assuming) him to be the stealer of the horse, with eyes agitated by anger, they armed themselves with spades, ploughs, various trees, and stones.
हिंदी अनुवाद
वे उसे (कपिल को) 'घोड़ा चुराने वाला' समझकर, क्रोध से व्याकुल नेत्रों वाले हो गए। वे कुदाल (खनित्र), हल, तथा अनेक प्रकार के वृक्ष और पत्थर धारण किए हुए (दौड़े)।
English Commentary
This verse captures the fatal error. Assuming the sage to be the haya-haram (horse thief), they are consumed by rage (krodha). Abandoning all warrior etiquette, they weaponize their excavation tools—spades and ploughs—and even uproot trees and grab stones. This improvised armory signifies a mob mentality. Their eyes, agitated by anger, fail to see the divinity of the sage, seeing only a thief. This sacrilegious intent to attack a meditating sage seals their fate.

यह विनाश का क्षण है। उन्होंने बिना विचार किए कपिल मुनि को 'हय हरम्' (घोड़ा चोर) मान लिया। 'क्रोध पर्याकुल ईक्षणाः'—उनकी आँखें क्रोध से भर गईं, जिससे विवेक नष्ट हो गया। वे ऋषि पर आक्रमण करने के लिए जो कुछ भी हाथ लगा—खनित्र (कुदाल), हल, वृक्ष, पत्थर—उसे हथियार बनाकर दौड़े। एक तपस्वी ब्राह्मण पर हथियारों और पत्थरों से आक्रमण करना घोर पाप और धर्म का उल्लंघन है, जो उनकी बुद्धि के विनाश (विनाशकाले विपरीत बुद्धि) का प्रमाण है।
