Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
सगरस्य च पुत्राणाम् प्रादुर् आसीत् महास्वनः ।
पृथिव्याम् भिद्यमानायाम् निर्घात सम निःवनः ॥ ॥१-४०-६॥
sagarasya ca putrāṇām prādur āsīt mahāsvanaḥ । pṛthivyāṃ bhidyamānāyām nirghāta sama niḥvanaḥ ॥ ॥1-40-6॥
Translation
While the earth was being split by the sons of Sagara, there arose a great noise, resounding like the crash of thunder/a portentous natural calamity (Nirghata).

जब पृथ्वी को सगर के पुत्रों द्वारा फोड़ा जा रहा था, तब बादलों के टकराने/वज्रपात (निर्घात) जैसा एक महान और भयानक शब्द उत्पन्न हुआ।
English Commentary
The narrative returns to the physical action of digging. The auditory imagery here is intense. The sound produced by splitting the earth is compared to Nirghata—a term used in ancient Indian meteorology for a sudden, destructive sound like a thunderclap or a meteor strike, often considered an evil omen. This mahāsvanaḥ (great sound) underscores the violence of their labor. While the gods are now calm, the earth is still screaming under the assault, creating a tension that builds towards the climax when they finally break through to the netherworld.

कथा अब पुनः पृथ्वी पर लौटती है। सगर के पुत्र अपनी खुदाई जारी रखते हैं। 'निर्घात' शब्द का अर्थ है वह प्रचंड ध्वनि जो दो बादलों के टकराने से या वायु के आघात से होती है; इसे अपशकुन माना जाता है। पृथ्वी के विदीर्ण होने की ध्वनि इतनी तीव्र थी कि उसे 'महास्वनः' कहा गया। यह ध्वनि केवल शोर नहीं थी, बल्कि आने वाले विनाश की चेतावनी थी। वाल्मीकि जी ध्वनि के माध्यम से दृश्य की भयावहता का निर्माण कर रहे हैं। यह दर्शाता है कि ब्रह्मा जी की भविष्यवाणी के समानांतर पृथ्वी पर हिंसा अभी भी चरम पर थी।
