तत् श्रुत्वा घोर संकाशम् वाक्यम् अंशुमतो नृपः ।
यज्ञम् निर्वर्तयामास यथा कल्पम् यथा विधि ॥ ॥१-४१-२४॥
Tat śrutvā ghora saṃkāśam vākyam aṃśumato nṛpaḥ । Yajñam nirvartayāmāsa yathā kalpam yathā vidhi ॥ ॥1-41-24॥
Translation
Hearing that terrifying speech from Anshuman, the King (Sagara) completed the sacrifice in accordance with the scriptures and prescribed rituals.
हिंदी अनुवाद
अंशुमान के मुख से उस घोर (भयानक) समाचार को सुनकर, राजा सगर ने विधि-विधान और शास्त्रों के अनुसार अपने यज्ञ को पूर्ण किया।
English Commentary
This verse exemplifies the stoicism and adherence to Dharma expected of a Vedic King. Upon hearing the ghora (terrifying) news of his sons' annihilation, Sagara does not abandon the ritual in grief. Instead, he completes the Ashwamedha Yajna yathā kalpam yathā vidhi (according to the scriptures and rules). To leave a Yajna incomplete is a grave spiritual offense. Sagara suppresses his personal agony to fulfill his public and spiritual duty, demonstrating why he is considered one of the great monarchs of the solar dynasty.

यह श्लोक राजा सगर के चरित्र की महानता और संयम को दर्शाता है। ६०,००० पुत्रों के विनाश का 'घोर' समाचार सुनकर किसी भी पिता का टूट जाना स्वाभाविक था। किन्तु, सगर ने अपने 'राजधर्म' और 'यजमान' के दायित्व को पुत्र-मोह से ऊपर रखा। यदि वे शोक में डूबकर यज्ञ खंडित कर देते, तो यह राज्य के लिए अनिष्टकारी होता। 'यथा कल्पम् यथा विधि' (कल्प और विधि के अनुसार) वाक्यांश यह बताता है कि उन्होंने यज्ञ की किसी भी प्रक्रिया में कोई त्रुटि नहीं होने दी, जो उनकी असाधारण आत्म-शक्ति का परिचायक है।
