स खातम् पितृभिः मार्गम् अन्तर् भौमम् महात्मभिः ।
प्रापद्यत नरश्रेष्ठ तेन राज्ञा अभिचोदितः ॥ ॥१-४१-६॥
sa khātam pitṛbhiḥ mārgam antar bhaumam mahātmabhiḥ । prāpadyata naraśreṣṭha tena rājñā abhicoditaḥ ॥ ॥1-41-6॥
Translation
Urged on by the king, that best of men (Anshuman) took the subterranean path that had been excavated by his high-souled fathers.

राजा (सगर) द्वारा प्रेरित होकर, वह नरश्रेष्ठ (अंशुमान) अपने महात्मा पितरों (चाचाओं) द्वारा खोदे गए भूमिगत मार्ग से गया।
English Commentary
Anshuman follows the path of least resistance, utilizing the massive excavation work already done by his uncles (pitrubhih khatam). The narrative honors the physical feat of the 60,000 sons by referring to them as mahatmabhih (great souls/mighty ones) in this context. Being urged by the King (rajna abhicoditah), Anshuman descends into the earth. The repetition of taking the same path builds suspense—will he meet the same fate, or will his superior character lead to a different outcome?

अंशुमान ने नया रास्ता बनाने में समय व्यर्थ नहीं किया, बल्कि 'खातम् पितृभिः मार्गम्'—उसी मार्ग का अनुसरण किया जो उसके चाचाओं ने खोदा था। यहाँ उसके चाचाओं को भी 'महात्मभिः' कहा गया है, जो संभवतः उनके विशाल कर्म (पूरी पृथ्वी को खोदना) या राजवंशीय सम्मान के कारण है। 'नरश्रेष्ठ' (मनुष्यों में श्रेष्ठ) विशेषण अंशुमान के लिए है। यह यात्रा प्रतीकात्मक भी है—वह अपने पूर्वजों के पदचिन्हों पर चल रहा है, लेकिन उनका उद्देश्य सुधार (rectification) है, विनाश नहीं।
