ऊर्ध्व बाहुः पंच तपा मास आहारो जितेइन्द्रियः ।
तस्य वर्ष सहस्राणि घोरे तपसि तिष्ठतः ॥ ॥१-४२-१३॥
Ūrdhva bāhuḥ paṃca tapā māsa āhāro jitendriyaḥ । Tasya varṣa sahasrāṇi ghore tapasi tiṣṭhataḥ ॥ ॥1-42-13॥
Translation
With arms raised up, amidst five fires, eating only once a month, and with conquered senses, he remained in terrible penance. Thus, thousands of years passed for him.

वे अपनी बाहें ऊपर उठाए (ऊर्ध्व बाहु), पंचाग्नि के मध्य रहकर, महीने में केवल एक बार आहार ग्रहण करते हुए और अपनी इंद्रियों को जीतकर घोर तपस्या में स्थित रहे। इस प्रकार उन्हें हजारों वर्ष बीत गए।
English Commentary
The imagery here is intense and iconic of severe asceticism (Tapas). Bhagiratha practices Urdhva bahu (keeping arms raised constantly), which leads to atrophy and immense pain, symbolizing a total surrender to the divine. He practices Pancha tapa (Five Fires), sitting amidst four fires on the ground with the blazing sun as the fifth overhead, signifying endurance of extreme heat. His diet is restricted to a monthly intake (māsa āhāro), indicating survival on pure willpower. Being Jitendriya (conqueror of senses), he ignored all physical demands. The verse emphasizes the duration—thousands of years—transforming his penance from a mere act of devotion into a cosmic event that generates immense spiritual heat (Tapas), capable of disturbing the equilibrium of the heavens.
