Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
अतीतानि महाबाहो तस्य राज्ञो महात्मनः ।
सुप्रीतो भगवान् ब्रह्मा प्रजानाम् पतिः ईश्वरः ॥ ॥१-४२-१४॥
Atītāni mahābāho tasya rājño mahātmanaḥ । Suprīto bhagavān brahmā prajānām patiḥ īśvaraḥ ॥ ॥1-42-14॥
Translation
O Mighty-armed one! Many years passed for that high-souled King (in this manner). Then, Lord Brahma, the Lord of creatures and the Supreme Ruler, was highly pleased.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे महाबाहु (राम)! उस महात्मा राजा (भगीरथ) के (तपस्या में) बहुत वर्ष बीत गए। तब प्रजापति और (सृष्टि के) ईश्वर भगवान ब्रह्मा उनसे अत्यंत प्रसन्न हुए।
English Commentary
The climax of the penance is reached. The verse indicates the passage of a vast amount of time (Atītāni) during which Bhagiratha never wavered. His persistence earns him the title Mahātmanaḥ (Great Soul). The result of this austerity is the grace of Brahma. Brahma is described here with weighty titles: Bhagavan (The Lord), Prajānām patiḥ (Lord of all creatures), and Ishvara (The Supreme Controller). This accumulation of epithets underscores Brahma's authority to grant the difficult boon Bhagiratha seeks. The word Suprītaḥ (well-pleased) is crucial; in Vedic mythology, the gods are bound to respond when a devotee generates sufficient tapas and pleases them. The stage is now set for the divine intervention that Dilipa and Anshuman could only dream of.
