तम् उवाच महातेजाः सर्वलोक पितामहम् ।
भगीरथो महाबाहुः कृत अंजलिपुटः स्थितः ॥ ॥१-४२-१७॥
tam uvāca mahātejāḥ sarvaloka pitāmaham । bhagīratho mahābāhuḥ kṛta añjalipuṭaḥ sthitaḥ ॥ ॥1-42-17॥
Translation
Then, the exceedingly resplendent and mighty-armed Bhagiratha, standing with folded hands (Anjali), spoke to the Grandfather of all worlds (Brahma).
हिंदी अनुवाद
तब महातेजस्वी और विशाल भुजाओं वाले (महाबाहु) भगीरथ ने हाथ जोड़कर (कृतांजलि होकर) समस्त लोकों के पितामह (ब्रह्मा जी) से कहा।
English Commentary
This verse highlights the humility of Bhagiratha. Despite being described as Mahatejah (possessing great splendor) and Mahabahu (mighty-armed)—attributes of a powerful warrior-king—he stands before the Creator with Krita-anjali-puta (palms joined in reverence). This juxtaposition of immense personal power and profound humility constitutes the ideal demeanor of a seeker. Addressing Brahma as Sarvaloka Pitamaha (Grandfather of all worlds) implies that the request Bhagiratha is about to make, while specific to his ancestors, involves forces (like the Ganga) that are significant to the entire cosmos. It sets a respectful tone for the petition of the boons.

यद्यपि भगीरथ 'महातेजाः' (महान तेज वाले) और 'महाबाहुः' (शक्तिशाली भुजाओं वाले) हैं, फिर भी वे ब्रह्मा जी के समक्ष 'कृतांजलि' (हाथ जोड़े हुए) खड़े हैं। यह उनकी विनम्रता और शिष्टाचार को दर्शाता है। शक्ति और विनम्रता का यह संतुलन ही एक आदर्श साधक का लक्षण है। 'सर्वलोक पितामहम्' शब्द का प्रयोग यह सूचित करता है कि ब्रह्मा जी न केवल भगीरथ के इष्ट हैं, बल्कि वे समस्त सृष्टि के संरक्षक हैं, और गंगा का अवतरण केवल इक्ष्वाकु वंश के लिए ही नहीं, अपितु समस्त लोकों के लिए कल्याणकारी होगा। भगीरथ की शारीरिक मुद्रा यहाँ पूर्ण समर्पण और श्रद्धा का भाव व्यक्त कर रही है।
