यदि मे भगवान् प्रीतो यदि अस्ति तपसः फलम् ।
सगरस्य आत्मजाः सर्वे मत्तः सलिलम् आप्नुयुः ॥ ॥१-४२-१८॥
yadi me bhagavān prīto yadi asti tapasaḥ phalam । sagarasya ātmajāḥ sarve mattaḥ salilam āpnuyuḥ ॥ ॥1-42-18॥
Translation
(Bhagiratha said) O Lord, if You are pleased with me, and if there is any fruit to my penance, then let all the sons of Sagara receive the water offering (libation) from me.
हिंदी अनुवाद
(भगीरथ ने कहा) हे भगवन्! यदि आप मुझ पर प्रसन्न हैं और यदि मेरे तप का कोई फल है, तो सगर के (साठ हजार) पुत्रों को मेरे द्वारा दिया गया जल (तर्पण) प्राप्त हो।
English Commentary
This is Bhagiratha’s primary request and the core motivation behind his asceticism. In Vedic tradition, the liberation of ancestors (Pitri-tarpan) is a sacred duty. The sons of Sagara had been incinerated by the wrath of Sage Kapila and had died without proper funeral rites, leaving their souls in limbo. Significantly, Bhagiratha does not ask for personal power or wealth; he asks for the privilege to perform the water rites for his ancestors. By saying 'let them receive water from me,' he implies the necessity of the Ganga, as only her sanctifying waters can purify their ashes and validate the offering. This reflects the highest ideal of filial piety and selfless duty.

यह भगीरथ का प्रथम और मुख्य वर है। हिंदू धर्मशास्त्रों में पितृ-ऋण से मुक्ति अत्यंत आवश्यक मानी गई है। सगर के पुत्र कपिल मुनि के कोप से भस्म हो गए थे और उनकी अन्त्येष्टि क्रिया (और्ध्वदैहिक संस्कार) विधिवत नहीं हो पाई थी, जिससे वे प्रेत योनि में भटक रहे थे। भगीरथ यहाँ अपने लिए कोई सुख-सुविधा नहीं मांगते, बल्कि अपने पूर्वजों की शांति की कामना करते हैं। 'मत्तः सलिलम् आप्नुयुः' का अर्थ है कि भगीरथ स्वयं उन्हें तिलांजलि देना चाहते हैं, जो तभी संभव है जब उनकी राख गंगा जल से पवित्र हो जाए। यह निष्काम कर्म और कुल के प्रति कर्तव्यनिष्ठा का सर्वोच्च उदाहरण है।
