गन्गायाः सलिल क्लिन्ने भस्मनि एषाम् महात्मनाम् ।
स्वर्गम् गच्छेयुर् अत्यंतम् सर्वे मे प्रपितामहाः ॥ ॥१-४२-१९॥
gangāyāḥ salila klinne bhasmani eṣām mahātmanām । svargam gaccheyur atyantam sarve me prapitāmahāḥ ॥ ॥1-42-19॥
Translation
When the ashes of these great souls are drenched by the waters of the Ganga, let all my great-grandfathers attain heaven eternally.

जब इन महात्माओं (सगर-पुत्रों) की भस्म गंगा जी के जल से गीली (प्लावित) हो जाए, तब मेरे ये सभी प्रपितामह (परदादा) शाश्वत रूप से स्वर्ग को प्राप्त करें।
English Commentary
Bhagiratha specifies the mechanism of his ancestors' salvation: the physical contact of the holy Ganga water with their ashes (Bhasma). The phrase Gangayah salila klinne (wet/drenched by the water of Ganga) underscores the belief in the potent, purifying nature of the river. As Ganga is of divine origin, her touch serves as a soteriological agent, capable of cleansing even the gravest sins (like the offense against a sage) and granting liberation. Bhagiratha respectfully refers to his ancestors as Mahatmanam (great souls) and requests that their transition to heaven be atyantam (eternal/permanent), ensuring they are released from their ghostly state forever.

यहाँ भगीरथ गंगा जल की मोक्षदायिनी शक्ति को स्पष्ट करते हैं। वे केवल जल तर्पण नहीं चाहते, बल्कि गंगा का भौतिक संपर्क उस भस्म के साथ चाहते हैं जो पाताल में पड़ी है। 'सलिल क्लिन्ने' का अर्थ है जल से पूरी तरह भीग जाना। यह मान्यता है कि गंगा विष्णु के चरणों से निकली है और शिव की जटाओं में रहती है, इसलिए उसका स्पर्श मात्र ही पापों को धोने और मुक्ति (स्वर्ग) प्रदान करने में सक्षम है। भगीरथ अपने पूर्वजों को 'महात्मा' कहते हैं, जो उनके प्रति उनके आदर को दर्शाता है, भले ही वे एक अपराध (कपिल मुनि का अपमान) के कारण नष्ट हुए थे। 'अत्यंतम्' शब्द यहाँ अक्षय या शाश्वत स्वर्ग वास की कामना के लिए प्रयुक्त हुआ है।
