Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
स राजा सुमहान् आसीत् अंशुमान् रघुनंदन ।
तस्य पुत्रो महान् आसीत् दिलीप इति विश्रुतः ॥ ॥१-४२-२॥
Sa rājā sumahān āsīt aṃśumān raghunaṃdana । Tasya putro mahān āsīt dilīpa iti viśrutaḥ ॥ ॥1-42-2॥
Translation
He, Anshuman, was a very great King, O delight of the Raghus. He had a great son who was renowned by the name Dilipa.

हे रघुनंदन! अंशुमान एक अत्यंत महान राजा सिद्ध हुए। उनका एक महान पुत्र हुआ जो 'दिलीप' नाम से विख्यात था।
English Commentary
This verse serves as a genealogical bridge. It establishes Anshuman as a successful monarch (sumahān) and introduces the next link in the chain: Dilipa. The address Raghunandana reminds Rama that these are his own illustrious forebears. The text emphasizes the greatness of each generation to show that the failure to bring Ganga was not due to incompetence, but due to the sheer magnitude of the task. Even great kings like Anshuman and Dilipa found themselves tested beyond their limits by this challenge.

वाल्मीकि जी यहाँ पीढ़ियों का क्रम बता रहे हैं। अंशुमान भी अपने दादा सगर की तरह 'सुमहान्' (अति महान) राजा बने। उन्होंने प्रजा का पालन भली-भांति किया। उनके पुत्र का नाम दिलीप था। रामायण में वंशावली का उल्लेख केवल नाम गिनाने के लिए नहीं, बल्कि यह दिखाने के लिए किया जाता है कि यह 'प्रतिज्ञा' और 'दायित्व' कैसे एक पीढ़ी से दूसरी पीढ़ी को हस्तांतरित हो रहा है। दिलीप का परिचय भी 'महान' और 'विश्रुतः' (प्रख्यात) कहकर दिया गया है, जो इक्ष्वाकु वंश की निरंतरता को दर्शाता है।
