गंगायाः पतनम् राजन् पृथिवी न सहिष्यते ।
ताम् वै धारयितुम् राजन् न अन्यम् पश्यामि शूलिनः ॥ ॥१-४२-२४॥
gangāyāḥ patanam rājan pṛthivī na sahiṣyate । tām vai dhārayitum rājan na anyam paśyāmi śūlinaḥ ॥ ॥1-42-24॥
Translation
O King, the Earth will not be able to sustain the fall of the Ganga. O King, I see no one other than the Trident-wielder (Shiva) capable of holding her.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे राजन्! गंगा के (आकाश से) गिरने के वेग को पृथ्वी सहन नहीं सकेगी। हे राजन्! भगवान शूलपाणि (शिव) के अतिरिक्त किसी अन्य को मैं उन्हें धारण करने में समर्थ नहीं देखता।
English Commentary
Brahma elucidates the danger: the Earth cannot withstand the kinetic force (patanam) of the celestial Ganga descending from the heavens. It would lead to cataclysmic destruction. Brahma categorically states that aside from Shulin (the Wielder of the Trident, Shiva), no being in the universe possesses the capacity to break this fall. This serves to elevate Lord Shiva’s status as the supreme controller of cosmic energy. The reference to the Trident (Shula) symbolizes his power over the three aspects of time and creation, necessary to tame the river that flows through three worlds (Tripathaga).

ब्रह्मा जी स्पष्ट करते हैं कि शिव की आवश्यकता क्यों है। गंगा स्वर्ग से प्रचंड वेग (Momentum) के साथ उतरेंगी। यदि वे सीधे पृथ्वी पर गिरीं, तो पृथ्वी रसातल में धंस सकती है या नष्ट हो सकती है। 'न अन्यम् पश्यामि' (मैं किसी और को नहीं देखता) यह ब्रह्मा जी का कथन शिव की अद्वितीय शक्ति की पुष्टि करता है। शिव को यहाँ 'शूलिनः' (त्रिशूल धारी) कहा गया है, जो उनके संहारक और नियंत्रक स्वरूप का प्रतीक है—जो शक्ति का संधारण और नियंत्रण कर सकते हैं। यह श्लोक गंगा अवतरण में शिव की अपरिहार्यता को स्थापित करता है।
