तस्य चिंतयतो नित्यम् धर्मेण विदित आत्मनः ।
पुत्रो भगीरथो नाम जज्ञे परम धार्मिकः ॥ ॥१-४२-७॥
Tasya ciṃtayato nityam dharmeṇa vidita ātmanaḥ । Putro bhagīratho nāma jajñe parama dhārmikaḥ ॥ ॥1-42-7॥
Translation
To that King (Dilipa), who was self-realized through Dharma and constantly engrossed in these thoughts, was born a most righteous son named Bhagiratha.

स्वयं को धर्मपूर्वक जानने वाले (आत्मज्ञानी) तथा नित्य इसी चिंता में मग्न रहने वाले उस राजा (दिलीप) के यहाँ, भगीरथ नामक परम धार्मिक पुत्र का जन्म हुआ।
English Commentary
This verse serves as a pivotal transition in the narrative, introducing the protagonist of this monumental endeavor: Bhagiratha. King Dilipa is described as vidita ātmanaḥ, meaning one who knows the self or acts according to the highest principles of righteousness. Despite his spiritual wisdom, his inability to solve the problem of his ancestors weighed heavily on him. It is in this atmosphere of dutiful contemplation that Bhagiratha is born. The epithet parama dhārmikaḥ (supremely righteous) applied to Bhagiratha is significant; it foreshadows his immense capacity for penance and his unwavering adherence to duty. The verse suggests a continuity of purpose—the unfulfilled aspiration of the father manifests as the destiny of the son. It establishes Bhagiratha not just as a prince, but as the divinely appointed agent of deliverance for the Solar Dynasty.
