Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
ह्लादिनी पावनी चैव नलिनी च तथा एव च ।
तिस्रः प्राचीम् दिशम् जग्मुः गंगाः शिव जलाः शुभाः ॥ ॥१-४३-१२॥
hlādinī pāvanī caiva nalinī ca tathā eva ca । tisraḥ prācīm diśam jagmuḥ gangāḥ śiva jalāḥ śubhāḥ ॥ ॥1-43-12॥
Translation
Hladini, Pavani, and Nalini—these three auspicious streams of Ganga, possessing blessed waters, flowed towards the eastern direction.

ह्लादिनी, पावनी और नलिनी—ये तीन शुभ और कल्याणकारी जल वाली गंगा की धाराएँ पूर्व दिशा (प्राची) की ओर चली गईं।
English Commentary
This verse identifies the eastern distributaries. The names—Hladini (Gladdening), Pavani (Purifying), and Nalini (Lotus-bearing)—are poetic yet specific. They are described as flowing Prachim (East). Scholars often correlate these with the major eastward-flowing rivers originating from the Tibetan plateau, such as the Brahmaputra (Yarlung Tsangpo), the Mekong, or the Yangtze. Calling the waters Shiva-jalah (waters of Shiva) reinforces the sanctity retained from their contact with the Lord's head.

यहाँ गंगा की सात धाराओं में से पहली तीन का नाम और दिशा बताई गई है। ह्लादिनी (आनंद देने वाली), पावनी (पवित्र करने वाली) और नलिनी (कमल जैसी सुंदर)—ये तीनों पूर्व दिशा की ओर बह निकलीं। पुराणों और ऐतिहासिक भूगोल के अनुसार, इन नदियों की पहचान ब्रह्मपुत्र और उसकी सहायक नदियों या म्यांमार और चीन की ओर बहने वाली नदियों (जैसे इरावदी या साल्विन) से की जाती है। 'शिव जलाः' विशेषण यह याद दिलाता है कि यह जल साधारण नहीं, बल्कि शिव के स्पर्श से पवित्र हुआ 'शिव-जल' है।
