Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
प्रायात् अग्रे महाराजाः तम् गंगा पृष्ठतो अन्वगात् ।
देवाः स ऋषि गणाः सर्वे दैत्य दानव राक्षसाः ॥ ॥१-४३-३०॥
Prāyāt agre mahārājāḥ tam gaṅgā pṛṣṭhato anvagāt |
Devāḥ sa ṛṣi gaṇāḥ sarve daitya dānava rākṣasāḥ ॥1-43-30॥
Translation
The great King Bhagiratha drove ahead, and Ganga followed behind him. Following them were all the gods, hosts of Rishis, Daityas, Danavas, and Rakshasas.
हिंदी अनुवाद
महाराज भगीरथ आगे-आगे चले और गंगा जी उनके पीछे-पीछे चलीं। देवता, ऋषियों के समूह, दैत्य, दानव और राक्षस—सभी उनके पीछे चल पड़े।
English Commentary
This verse paints a grand procession. It inverts the usual hierarchy: a mortal king leads, and the divine force follows. Bhagiratha leading Ganga (tam ganga prishthato anvagat) signifies the success of his mission; she is compliant to his path. The procession is inclusive of all orders of creation—Devas, Rishis, and even the antagonistic forces like Daityas, Danavas, and Rakshasas. The universal appeal of the Ganga unites these warring factions in a shared pilgrimage. It emphasizes that the blessings of the Ganga are accessible to all beings, regardless of their celestial or demonic alignment, provided they follow the path of righteousness (symbolized by Bhagiratha).

यह एक अद्भुत जुलूस का दृश्य है। एक नश्वर मनुष्य (भगीरथ) आगे चल रहा है और त्रिभुवन की सबसे पवित्र नदी उसका अनुसरण कर रही है। यह मानव संकल्प की विजय का प्रतीक है। 'पृष्ठतो अन्वगात्' (पीछे-पीछे चलीं) दर्शाता है कि गंगा ने भगीरथ को अपना पुत्र और पथ-प्रदर्शक मान लिया था (इसीलिए उन्हें भागीरथी कहा जाता है)। इस यात्रा में केवल देवता ही नहीं, बल्कि उनके शत्रु—दैत्य, दानव और राक्षस—भी शामिल थे। गंगा का आकर्षण इतना सार्वभौमिक था कि इसने देव-दानव के शाश्वत संघर्ष को भी क्षण भर के लिए समाप्त कर दिया। सभी उस पावन धारा के पीछे चल रहे थे।
