Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
अपिबत् तु जलम् सर्वम् गंगयाः परम अद्भुतम् ।
ततो देवाः स गंघर्व ऋषयः च सु विस्मिताः ॥ ॥१-४३-३५॥
Apibat tu jalam sarvam gaṅgayāḥ parama adbhutam |
Tato devāḥ sa gaṃdharva ṛṣayaḥ ca su vismitāḥ ॥1-43-35॥
Translation
He drank up all the water of the Ganga—a truly most wonderful feat. Thereupon, the gods, along with the Gandharvas and sages, were struck with great amazement.

(क्रोधित होकर) ऋषि ने गंगा का सारा जल पी लिया, जो एक परम अद्भुत घटना थी। इसे देखकर गन्धर्वों और ऋषियों सहित सभी देवता अत्यंत विस्मित (हैरान) हो गए।
English Commentary
This verse describes a feat of metaphysical magnitude. Sage Jahnu, utilizing his yogic powers, swallows the entire rushing river in a single sip (or act of drinking). This act is described as parama adbhutam (supremely miraculous). The Ganga, which had just descended from the heavens and withstood the matted locks of Shiva, is suddenly absorbed by a single sage. This stunned the celestial observers (Devas, Gandharvas, Rishis). It serves as a dramatic reminder of the supremacy of Tapas (ascetic heat/power). In the hierarchy of power presented here, the focused will of a self-controlled sage can contain even the wildest forces of nature and divinity. The sudden disappearance of the river creates a crisis, shifting the emotion from awe of the river to awe of the sage.

यह रामायण के सबसे आश्चर्यजनक प्रसंगों में से एक है। ऋषि जह्नु ने अपने तपोबल से गंगा के विशाल प्रवाह को एक आचमन (हथेली भर जल) की तरह पी लिया। 'परम अद्भुतम्' शब्द का प्रयोग यहाँ सर्वथा उचित है क्योंकि गंगा कोई साधारण नदी नहीं थीं; वह शिव की जटाओं से निकली थीं और उनका वेग अपार था। एक मानव शरीर धारी ऋषि द्वारा उस समस्त जलराशि को पी जाना, भारतीय ऋषि परंपरा की असीम शक्ति का परिचायक है। देवता और गन्धर्व, जो आकाश से यह दृश्य देख रहे थे, वे स्तब्ध रह गए। यह घटना सिद्ध करती है कि 'तप' की शक्ति 'दैवीय प्रवाह' से भी अधिक प्रभावी हो सकती है यदि उस प्रवाह में संयम न हो। गंगा का लोप हो जाना भगीरथ के मिशन के लिए एक बड़ा संकट बन गया, जिससे सभी लोकों में खलबली मच गई।
