Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
ततः तुष्टः महातेजाः श्रोत्राभ्याम् असृजत् प्रभुः ।
तस्मात् जह्नु सुता गंग प्रोच्यते जाह्नवी इति च ॥ ॥१-४३-३७॥
Tataḥ tuṣṭaḥ mahātejāḥ śrotrābhyām asṛjat prabhuḥ |
Tasmāt jahnu sutā gaṅga procyate jāhnavī iti ca ॥1-43-37॥
Translation
Then, being pleased, the immensely resplendent lord released the Ganga through his ears. Therefore, being the daughter of Jahnu, the Ganga is also spoken of as "Jahnavi."
हिंदी अनुवाद
तब उस महातेजस्वी प्रभु (जह्नु) ने प्रसन्न होकर अपने दोनों कानों से गंगा को बाहर निकाल दिया (प्रवाहित कर दिया)। इसीलिए जह्नु की पुत्री होने के कारण गंगा 'जाह्नवी' भी कही जाती हैं।
English Commentary
This verse concludes the Jahnu episode with a mythological transformation. Pleased by the reverence shown, Jahnu releases the waters. The specific detail that he released her through his ears (srotrabhyam) is iconic. In Hindu iconography, the ears are associated with space (Akasha) and the reception of sacred sound (Shruti). By emerging from the sage's ears, Ganga is metaphorically reborn, imbued with the sage's ascetic merit. She is no longer just the descent of water; she is now 'Jahnavi,' the daughter of Jahnu. This act legitimizes her flow on earth not as an invasion, but as a lineage. The name Jahnavi serves as a perpetual reminder of this event, symbolizing that true power must pass through the filter of wisdom and restraint (represented by the Sage) to be truly beneficial to the world.

देवताओं की प्रार्थना से प्रसन्न होकर ('तुष्टः'), महातेजस्वी ऋषि ने गंगा को मुक्त कर दिया। लेकिन मुक्ति का मार्ग अद्भुत था—'श्रोत्राभ्याम्' (कानों के माध्यम से)। प्रतीकात्मक रूप से, कान 'श्रुति' या ज्ञान सुनने का स्थान हैं; गंगा का वहां से निकलना यह भी संकेत कर सकता है कि अब वह ऋषि के ज्ञान और संयम से संस्कारित होकर निकली हैं। अब वह केवल शिव की जटाओं का जल नहीं, बल्कि ऋषि जह्नु की पुत्री भी थीं। इस श्लोक में गंगा के 'जाह्नवी' नाम की व्युत्पत्ति (origin) दी गई है, जो आज भी गंगा का एक प्रमुख नाम है। यह घटना गंगा की यात्रा में एक और शुद्धिकरण संस्कार की तरह थी, जहाँ उन्होंने ऋषि के तेज को अपने भीतर समाहित कर लिया और 'जह्नु-सुता' कहलाईं।
