Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
रसातलम् उपागच्छत् सिद्ध्यर्थम् तस्य कर्मणः ।
भगीरथो अपि रजार्षि गंगम् आदाय यत्नतः ॥ ॥१-४३-३९॥
Rasātalam upāgacchat siddhyartham tasya karmaṇaḥ |
Bhagīratho api rajārṣi gaṅgam ādāya yatnataḥ ॥1-43-39॥
Translation
To ensure the success of that mission (liberation of ancestors), the Ganga entered the Rasatala (Netherworld). The royal sage Bhagiratha also led the Ganga there with great effort.

उस कार्य (पितरों के उद्धार) की सिद्धि के लिए गंगा रसातल में गईं। राजर्षि भगीरथ भी बड़े यत्न से गंगा को वहाँ ले गए।
English Commentary
The verse specifies the entry into the subterranean realm, Rasatala. The purpose is explicitly stated: Siddhyartham tasya karmanah (for the fulfillment of that duty/act). The entire descent from Brahma’s water pot to Shiva’s head, then to Earth, and through Jahnu’s ears, was for this specific moment of entering the netherworld. Bhagiratha is honorifically titled Rajarshi (Royal Sage), acknowledging that his achievement has elevated him from a mere king to a sage-like status. He led her yatnatah (with effort/care), indicating that guiding the river into the deep crevices of the earth required immense focus and navigational will to ensure the water reached the exact spot of the ashes.

यह श्लोक भगीरथ के मिशन के अंतिम चरण का वर्णन करता है। गंगा का प्रवाह पृथ्वी से नीचे 'रसातल' की ओर मुड़ गया, जहाँ सगर पुत्रों की भस्म थी। 'सिद्ध्यर्थम् तस्य कर्मणः'—यह सब कुछ केवल एक ही उद्देश्य के लिए था: उस कर्म (तर्पण/मुक्ति) की सिद्धि। भगीरथ को यहाँ 'राजर्षि' (राजा जो ऋषि के समान है) कहा गया है। यह उपाधि उनकी महान तपस्या और त्याग के कारण मिली है। 'यत्नतः' (प्रयत्नपूर्वक) शब्द बताता है कि पाताल का मार्ग कठिन और दुर्गम था, लेकिन भगीरथ ने सावधानीपूर्वक गंगा का मार्गदर्शन किया। यह वह क्षण है जब भौतिक जगत (पृथ्वी) का जल आध्यात्मिक जगत (पितृलोक/मुक्ति) के द्वार खोल रहा था।
