Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
पितमहान् भस्म क्रुतम् अपश्यत् गत चेतनः ।
अथ तत् भस्मनाम् राशिम् गंग सलिलम् उत्तमम् ।
प्लावयत् पूत पाप्मानः स्वर्गम् प्रप्ता रघु उत्तम ॥ ॥१-४३-४०॥
Pitamahān bhasma krutam apaśyat gata cetanaḥ |
Atha tat bhasmanām rāśim gaṅga salilam uttamam |
Plāvayat pūta pāpmānaḥ svargam praptā raghu uttama ॥1-43-40॥
Translation
There, he saw his ancestors reduced to ashes and devoid of consciousness. Then, O best of the Raghus! The excellent water of the Ganga inundated that heap of ashes, and purified of their sins, they attained heaven.

वहाँ पहुँचकर भगीरथ ने अपने अचेतन (मृत) पितामहों को भस्म के रूप में देखा। तदनन्तर, हे रघुकुल श्रेष्ठ (राम)! गंगा के उत्तम जल ने उस भस्म की राशि को प्लावित (गीला) कर दिया, जिससे वे सभी निष्पाप होकर स्वर्ग को प्राप्त हो गए।
English Commentary
This is the culminating verse of the descent saga. Bhagiratha witnesses the tragic state of his ancestors—heaps of ashes, lifeless (gata cetanah). The contact between the divine matter (Ganga water) and the mortal remains (ashes) triggers the liberation. The verb plavayat (flooded/inundated) signifies a total washing away of impurities. The instant the holy water touched the ashes, the souls were puta papmanah (cleansed of sins) and attained Swarga (Heaven). This moment enshrines the soteriological power of the Ganga; she is the liquid form of divine grace (Moksha-dayini). For Rama, listening to this, it is a validation of his lineage's spiritual potency. The impossible task was achieved, the ancestors were saved, and the 'Bhagiratha Prayatna' (Herculean effort) found its fruition.

यह सर्ग का चरमोत्कर्ष (Climax) है। भगीरथ अंततः अपने पूर्वजों के अवशेषों के पास पहुँचते हैं, जो 'गत चेतनः' (चेतना रहित/मृत) थे। जैसे ही गंगा के 'उत्तम जल' ने उस भस्म के ढेर को स्पर्श किया, एक चमत्कार हुआ। 'पूत पाप्मानः'—वे समस्त पापों से मुक्त हो गए। कपिल मुनि का शाप धुल गया। यह श्लोक हिंदू धर्म की इस मूल मान्यता को स्थापित करता है कि गंगा जल का स्पर्श (अस्थि विसर्जन) आत्मा को मुक्ति दिलाने में सक्षम है। 'स्वर्गम् प्रप्ता'—वे न केवल मुक्त हुए, बल्कि उन्हें उच्च लोकों की प्राप्ति हुई। हे रघु उत्तम! विश्वामित्र राम को संबोधित करते हुए यह कथा सुना रहे हैं, यह याद दिलाते हुए कि यह उन्हीं के कुल (रघुकुल) का गौरवशाली इतिहास है। भगीरथ का 'प्रयत्न' (भगीरथ-प्रयत्न) यहाँ सफल हुआ।
