Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
विशामि अहम् हि पातालम् स्त्रोतसा गृह्य शंकरम् ।
तस्याः वलेपनम् ज्ञत्व क्रुद्धः तु भगवन् हरः ॥ ॥१-४३-६॥
viśāmi aham hi pātālam strotasā gṛhya śankaram । tasyāḥ valepanam jñatva kruddhaḥ tu bhagavan haraḥ ॥ ॥1-43-6॥
Translation
(She thought) "I will indeed enter the netherworld (Patala), taking Shankara along with my current." Knowing her haughtiness/arrogance, Lord Hara became angry.
हिंदी अनुवाद
(गंगा ने सोचा) "मैं अपने प्रवाह के साथ शंकर को भी बहाकर पाताल लोक में ले जाऊँगी।" उसके इस अहंकार (अवलेपनम्) को जानकर भगवान हर (शिव) क्रुद्ध हो गए।
English Commentary
This presents the theological crux of the descent: purity requires humility. Ganga believed her force was superior to Shiva’s stability, thinking she could sweep him down to Patala. The term avalepanam signifies this pride or haughtiness. Shiva’s anger (kruddhah) is the reaction of a disciplinarian. Before Ganga could serve her purpose of liberation, she needed to be relieved of her ego. Thus, the "catching" of Ganga becomes not just a physical necessity, but a spiritual purification of the river itself.

यह श्लोक गंगा के अहंकार (अवलेपनम्) को उजागर करता है। उन्हें अपनी शक्ति पर इतना गर्व था कि उन्हें लगा वे त्रिलोकीनाथ शिव को भी बहा ले जाएँगी। देवताओं में भी मानवीय गुण-दोष होते हैं, और यहाँ गंगा का मद स्पष्ट है। शिव, जो अंतर्यामी हैं, ने तत्काल उनके मन के भाव को जान लिया। 'क्रुद्धः' (क्रोधित) होना यहाँ विनाश के लिए नहीं, बल्कि सुधार के लिए है। अहंकार से युक्त गंगा का जल पृथ्वी को पवित्र नहीं कर सकता था, इसलिए शिव ने उनके वेग और अहंकार दोनों को तोड़ने का निर्णय लिया।
