दिल्लीपेन महाभाग तव पित्रा अतितेजसा ।
पुनर् न शकिता नेतुम् गंगाम् प्रार्थयत अनघ ॥१-४४-११॥
dilīpena mahābhāga tava pitrā atitejasā |
punar na śakitā netum gaṃgām prārthayata anagha ॥1-44-11॥
Translation
O fortunate one! O sinless one! Even your highly resplendent father Dilipa, despite his prayers and efforts, was unable to bring the Ganga down.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे महाभाग! हे निष्पाप! तुम्हारे महातेजस्वी पिता दिलीप द्वारा भी प्रार्थना किए जाने पर गंगा को पुनः (पृथ्वी पर) नहीं लाया जा सका था।
English Commentary
In this verse, Lord Brahma addresses Bhagiratha, highlighting the magnitude of his achievement. By addressing him as 'Mahabhaga' (extremely fortunate) and 'Anagha' (sinless), Brahma acknowledges Bhagiratha's spiritual purity. Brahma reminds him that his father, King Dilipa, despite being 'Atitejasa' (possessing great splendor) and having prayed fervently, was unable to complete this monumental task. This comparison serves to elevate Bhagiratha's success; what a powerful predecessor could not achieve, the son has accomplished through unparalleled penance. It underscores the concept of specific destiny and the accumulation of merit across generations. While Dilipa laid the groundwork, it was Bhagiratha's unyielding determination that bore fruit. This statement acts as a divine validation of Bhagiratha's effort, confirming that he has surpassed the limitations of his ancestors to fulfill the lineage's solemn duty.

यहाँ पर लोकपितामह ब्रह्मा जी भगीरथ को संबोधित कर रहे हैं। ब्रह्मा जी का यह कथन भगीरथ की उपलब्धि की विशालता को रेखांकित करता है। 'महाभाग' (महान भाग्य वाले) और 'अनघ' (पापरहित) जैसे संबोधनों का प्रयोग भगीरथ की आध्यात्मिक स्थिति को दर्शाता है। ब्रह्मा जी स्मरण कराते हैं कि भगीरथ के पिता, महाराज दिलीप, जो स्वयं अत्यंत तेजस्वी थे और जीवन भर इस कार्य के लिए प्रयासरत रहे, वे भी सफल नहीं हो सके थे। यह तुलना भगीरथ की तपस्या की उग्रता और उनकी निष्ठा की श्रेष्ठता को सिद्ध करती है। दिलीप का प्रयास निष्फल नहीं था, उसने भगीरथ के लिए आधार तैयार किया, किन्तु कार्य की पूर्णता भगीरथ के ही हाथों लिखी थी। यह श्लोक पितृ-ऋण चुकाने के लिए पीढ़ियों के संघर्ष और अंततः एक सुयोग्य पुत्र द्वारा उस संकल्प की पूर्ति के महत्व को प्रतिपादित करता है। यह भगीरथ के पुरुषार्थ की सर्वोच्च प्रशंसा है।
