इदम् आख्यानम् आयुश्यम् गंगा अवतरणम् शुभम् ॥१-४४-२२॥

Translation
This auspicious narrative of the descent of the Ganga leads to longevity.

यह गंगा-अवतरण का शुभ आख्यान आयु (जीवन) को बढ़ाने वाला है।
English Commentary
This final verse serves as the closing seal of the chapter. Vishvamitra reiterates that this Akhyanam (narrative) of Ganga Avataran is Shubham (auspicious) and Ayushyam (conducive to longevity). The repetition of the benefit of longevity emphasizes its importance. Just as the physical Ganga sustains life, the narrative of her descent sustains the listener's life force. It encapsulates the belief that sacred sound (Shabda) and memory (Smriti) of divine acts have tangible impacts on physical reality. With this, the specific sub-story of the Ganges' descent concludes, preparing the audience (Rama and Lakshmana) for the subsequent events in their journey with Vishvamitra.

यह सर्ग का अंतिम श्लोक है जो पिछले श्लोक की निरंतरता में है। विश्वामित्र पुनः जोर देकर कहते हैं कि यह 'आख्यानम्' (कथा) 'शुभम्' (कल्याणकारी/पवित्र) है। विशेष रूप से इसे 'आयुश्यम्' (आयु वर्धक) कहा गया है। भारतीय परंपरा में गंगा को जीवनदायिनी माना गया है, अतः उसकी कथा भी प्राणशक्ति और जीवन अवधि को बढ़ाने वाली मानी जाती है। 'गंगा अवतरण' का स्मरण पापों का नाश करता है और अकाल मृत्यु के भय को दूर करता है। इस प्रकार बालकाण्ड का यह चौवालीसवाँ सर्ग, जो गंगा की महिमा और भगीरथ के तप को समर्पित था, यहाँ पूर्ण होता है।
