Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
इयम् च दुहिता ज्येष्ठा तव गंगा भविष्यति ।
त्वत् कृतेन च नाम्ना अथ लोके स्थास्यति विश्रुता ॥ ॥१-४४-५॥
Iyam ca duhitā jyeṣṭhā tava gaṅgā bhaviṣyati |
Tvat kṛtena ca nāmnā atha loke sthāsyati viśrutā ॥1-44-5॥
Translation
And this Ganga shall be your eldest daughter. Due to this deed performed by you, she will remain renowned in the world by a name derived from yours (Bhagirathi).
हिंदी अनुवाद
और यह गंगा तुम्हारी ज्येष्ठ (बड़ी) पुत्री कहलाएगी। तुम्हारे द्वारा किए गए (इस महान कार्य के) कारण यह लोक में तुम्हारे ही नाम (भागीरथी) से विख्यात होगी।
English Commentary
Here, the nomenclature of the river is divinely ordained. Brahma bestows the highest honor upon Bhagiratha: paternity over the divine river. By declaring her as his Jyeshtha duhita (eldest daughter), the relationship shifts from devotee-goddess to father-daughter, signifying that Bhagiratha's penance 'gave birth' to her presence on earth. The name "Bhagirathi" is formally established here. In the Indian tradition, giving one's name to a deity or divine entity is the ultimate recognition of Bhakti and effort. It implies that while Ganga is eternal, her earthly manifestation is the child of Bhagiratha's will.

ब्रह्माजी अब भगीरथ को उनका व्यक्तिगत पुरस्कार देते हैं। गंगा, जो पहले 'हिमवान-सुता' और फिर 'जह्नु-सुता' थीं, अब 'भगीरथ-सुता' (पुत्री) बनेंगी। 'दुहिता ज्येष्ठा' (बड़ी बेटी) का पद देकर ब्रह्मा ने भगीरथ और गंगा के संबंध को आत्मीय बना दिया। यह एक बहुत बड़ा सम्मान था कि त्रैलोक्य पावनी गंगा एक मानव राजा की पुत्री कहलाएं। 'त्वत् कृतेन नाम्ना'—अर्थात् तुम्हारे नाम से जानी जाएगी। इसी कारण गंगा का सबसे प्रसिद्ध नाम 'भागीरथी' पड़ा। यह नाम भगीरथ के तप और त्याग का शाश्वत प्रमाण है। इतिहास में राजा अपनी विजयों के लिए जाने जाते हैं, लेकिन भगीरथ अपनी 'बेटी' (नदी) के लिए अमर हो गए।
