गंगा त्रिपथगा नाम दिव्या भागीरथी इति च ।
त्रीन् पथो भावयन्ति इति तस्मत् त्रिपथगा स्मृताः ॥ ॥१-४४-६॥
Gaṅgā tripathagā nāma divyā bhāgīrathī iti ca |
Trīn patho bhāvayanti iti tasmat tripathagā smṛtā ॥1-44-6॥
Translation
The divine Ganga shall be known by the names "Tripathaga" and "Bhagirathi." Since she flows through (and purifies) the three paths, she is remembered as Tripathaga.

यह दिव्य गंगा 'त्रिपथगा' और 'भागीरथी' नाम से जानी जाएगी। चूँकि यह तीनों मार्गों (स्वर्ग, पृथ्वी और पाताल) को पवित्र करती (बहाती) है, इसलिए इसे 'त्रिपथगा' कहा जाता है।
English Commentary
Brahma explains the etymology of Ganga's epithet Tripathaga (Goer of three paths). The "three paths" refer to the cosmological triad: Heaven (Swarga), Earth (Martya), and the Netherworld (Patala). The verb bhavayanti implies not just flowing, but "nurturing" or "purifying" these worlds. This confirms Ganga as the Axis Mundi of fluid grace, connecting all realms of existence. While 'Bhagirathi' is her historical name linking her to the King, 'Tripathaga' is her functional/cosmic name describing her scope. This duality of names captures both her personal connection to humanity and her impersonal universal power.
