विश्वामित्र वचः श्रुत्वा राघवः सह लक्ष्मणः ।
विस्मयम् परमम् गत्वा विश्वामित्रम् अथ अब्रवीत् ॥१-४५-१॥
viśvāmitra vacaḥ śrutvā rāghavaḥ saha lakṣmaṇaḥ |
vismayam paramam gatvā viśvāmitram atha abravīt ॥1-45-1॥
Translation
Having heard the words of Vishvamitra, Raghava, along with Lakshmana, became struck with great wonder and then spoke to Vishvamitra.

विश्वामित्र के वचनों को सुनकर, लक्ष्मण सहित राघव (राम) अत्यंत विस्मित हुए और उन्होंने विश्वामित्र से कहा।
English Commentary
This verse opens Sarga 45. It captures the immediate reaction of Rama and Lakshmana after listening to the monumental saga of Ganga's descent in the previous chapter. They are described as being in a state of 'Paramam Vismayam' (supreme amazement). This reaction highlights the grandeur of Bhagiratha’s effort and the divine nature of the river. Even though Rama is divine, within the narrative of his human incarnation (Naralila), he exhibits the qualities of an engaged and humble student. His astonishment validates Vishvamitra's storytelling and sets the emotional tone for the conversation that follows.

यहाँ से ४५वें सर्ग का प्रारंभ होता है। ४४वें सर्ग में गंगा की अलौकिक कथा सुनने के बाद श्रोता (राम और लक्ष्मण) की प्रतिक्रिया का वर्णन है। 'विस्मयम् परमम् गत्वा' (परम विस्मय को प्राप्त होकर) वाक्यांश दर्शाता है कि भगीरथ के तप और गंगा के वेग की कथा ने राम के मन पर गहरा प्रभाव डाला। यद्यपि राम स्वयं विष्णु के अवतार हैं, किन्तु 'नर-लीला' करते हुए वे एक आदर्श शिष्य और जिज्ञासु की भांति व्यवहार कर रहे हैं। यह श्लोक गुरु और शिष्य के बीच के संवाद की निरंतरता बनाए रखता है और यह दिखाता है कि एक अच्छी कथा श्रोता को किस प्रकार मंत्रमुग्ध कर देती है।
