Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
श्रूयताम् राम शक्रस्य कथाम् कथयतः श्रुताम् ।
अस्मिन् देशे हि यत् वृत्तम् शृणु तत्त्वेन राघव ॥१-४५-१४॥
śrūyatām rāma śakrasya kathām kathayataḥ śrutām |
asmin deśe hi yat vṛttam śṛṇu tattvena rāghava ॥1-45-14॥
Translation
Listen, O Rama, to the story of Indra as I have heard it told. O Raghava, listen to the truth of what exactly happened in this land.

हे राम! इंद्र से संबंधित इस कथा को सुनो जैसा कि मैंने सुना है। हे राघव! इस देश (स्थान) में जो घटना घटी थी, उसे यथार्थ रूप (तत्वतः) में सुनो।
English Commentary
Vishwamitra explicitly states the subject of his narration: the story of Shakra (Indra). He emphasizes veracity by using the word tattvena (in essence/truthfully/exactly as it happened). By stating asmin deshe (in this very land), he grounds the mythological event in the physical location where they are currently encamped. This technique transforms the landscape around Rama into a living museum of divine history. It prepares Rama to understand that the soil of Vishala is steeped in the karma of the gods. The verse establishes Vishwamitra as a reliable narrator conveying received wisdom (shrutam).

विश्वामित्र कथा का विषय स्पष्ट करते हैं—यह 'शक्रस्य कथाम्' (इंद्र की कथा) है। विशाला नगरी का इतिहास देवराज इंद्र के कार्यों से जुड़ा है। विश्वामित्र कहते हैं कि वे इसे 'तत्वेन' (यथार्थ रूप में/मूल तथ्यों के साथ) सुनाएंगे। 'अस्मिन् देशे' (इसी देश/स्थान में) का उल्लेख महत्वपूर्ण है; यह राम को बताता है कि वे जिस भूमि पर खड़े हैं, वह साधारण नहीं है, बल्कि देवासुर संग्राम और समुद्र मंथन जैसी युगांतकारी घटनाओं की साक्षी है। यह 'स्थानीय माहात्म्य' (Sthal Mahatmya) का उदाहरण है, जहाँ तीर्थ या स्थान की महिमा बताई जाती है। विश्वामित्र यह भी संकेत देते हैं कि यह कथा श्रुति परंपरा (सुनी हुई) से उन तक पहुँची है।
