उत्पपाताम् अग्नि संकाशम् हालाहल महाविषम् ।
तेन दग्धम् जगत् सर्वम् स देव असुर मानुषम् ॥१-४५-२०॥
utpapātām agni saṃkāśam hālāhala mahāviṣam |
tena dagdham jagat sarvam sa deva asura mānuṣam ॥1-45-20॥
Translation
A great poison named Halahala, looking like fire, sprang forth. By it, the entire universe, including Devas, Asuras, and humans, began to burn.

(उससे) अग्नि के समान प्रज्वलित 'हालाहल' नामक महाविष उत्पन्न हुआ। उससे देवता, असुर और मनुष्यों सहित संपूर्ण जगत जलने लगा।
English Commentary
The situation escalates into a catastrophe. The Halahala poison emerges, described as Agni sankasham (resembling fire). Its toxicity is so potent that it starts burning the entire cosmos (Jagat sarvam), threatening the existence of Devas, Asuras, and humans alike. This verse captures the terrifying paradox of the churning: the quest for immortality first produced a substance of instant death. It highlights the vulnerability of the universe and the need for a higher power to intervene when the fundamental forces of creation go out of control.

वासुकि के मुख और समुद्र मंथन के घर्षण से 'हालाहल' विष प्रकट हुआ। इसे 'अग्नि संकाशम्' (आग जैसा दहकता हुआ) कहा गया है। इसका प्रभाव इतना भयानक था कि 'जगत् सर्वम् दग्धम्' (सारा संसार जलने लगा)। इसमें न केवल देव और असुर, बल्कि 'मानुषम्' (मनुष्य) भी प्रभावित हुए। यह एक वैश्विक संकट (cosmic catastrophe) का क्षण था। अमृत की चाह में विनाश का द्वार खुल गया। यह श्लोक बताता है कि प्रकृति के साथ छेड़छाड़ या गहरे मंथन से निकली ऊर्जा यदि अनियंत्रित हो, तो वह सर्वनाश का कारण बन सकती है।
