पालय अस्मान् महाबाहो गिरिम् उद्धर्तुम् अर्हसि ।
इति श्रुत्वा हृषीकेशः कामठम् रूपम् आस्थितः ॥ ॥१-४५-२९॥
pālaya asmān mahābāho girim uddhartum arhasi |
iti śrutvā hṛṣīkeśaḥ kāmaṭham rūpam āsthitaḥ ॥1-45-29॥
Translation
"Protect us, O Mighty-armed one! You alone are capable of lifting this mountain." Hearing this, Hrishikesha (Vishnu) assumed the form of a tortoise (Kamatha).
हिंदी अनुवाद
"हे महाबाहु! हमारी रक्षा करें, आप ही इस पर्वत का उद्धार करने (ऊपर उठाने) योग्य हैं।" यह सुनकर हृषीकेश (विष्णु) ने कच्छप (कछुए) का रूप धारण कर लिया।
English Commentary
This verse introduces the Kurma Avatar (Tortoise Incarnation). The gods appeal to Vishnu's strength (Mahabaho), and Vishnu, referred to as Hrishikesha (Master of the Senses), responds immediately. The choice of a tortoise is functional and symbolic; physically, a tortoise has a hard shell capable of bearing weight, and spiritually, it represents withdrawal and stability. By becoming the base for the mountain, Vishnu teaches that the Divine is the unseen foundation upon which all cosmic churning (action) rests.

यह श्लोक विष्णु के प्रसिद्ध 'कूर्म अवतार' (कछुआ अवतार) की उत्पत्ति का वर्णन करता है। देवताओं ने विष्णु को 'महाबाहु' कहा, जो उनकी शारीरिक शक्ति का सूचक है। विष्णु को यहाँ 'हृषीकेश' (इन्द्रियों के स्वामी) कहा गया है, जिसका अर्थ है कि वे किसी भी रूप को धारण करने और नियंत्रित करने में सक्षम हैं। कछुए का रूप इसलिए चुना गया क्योंकि उसकी पीठ कठोर होती है और वह भारी बोझ सहने में जल के भीतर सबसे उपयुक्त जीव है। यह दर्शाता है कि परमात्मा आवश्यकतानुसार कोई भी रूप धारण कर भक्तों के कार्य को सिद्ध करते हैं।
