Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
देवानाम् मध्यतः स्थित्वा ममन्थ पुरुषोत्तमः ।
अथ वर्ष सहस्रेण आयुर्वेदमयः पुमान् ॥ ॥१-४५-३१॥
devānām madhyataḥ sthitvā mamantha puruṣottamaḥ |
atha varṣa sahasreṇa āyurvedamayaḥ pumān ॥1-45-31॥
Translation
Standing among the gods, the Supreme Person (Vishnu) churned the ocean himself. Then, after a thousand years, a being who was the embodiment of Ayurveda arose.
हिंदी अनुवाद
पुरुषोत्तम (विष्णु) ने देवताओं के बीच खड़े होकर स्वयं भी मंथन किया। तदनंतर, एक हजार वर्षों के मंथन के बाद, आयुर्वेद से युक्त एक पुरुष प्रकट हुआ।
English Commentary
Vishnu's involvement is total: He is the base, the stabilizer, and now, a participant. As Purushottama, He joins the gods in the physical labor of churning. This signifies that Divine Grace cooperates with human/celestial effort. After a millennium of churning, the first significant outcome of this phase appears: a personification of Ayurveda (the science of life). The emergence of medicine/health prior to immortality (Amrita) suggests that maintaining the vehicle of the body is a prerequisite for spiritual attainment. This being is Dhanvantari, though named in the next verse.

विष्णु की भूमिका केवल आधार और संतुलन तक सीमित नहीं थी; उन्होंने 'पुरुषोत्तम' रूप में देवताओं के बीच खड़े होकर रस्सी खींचने में भी सहायता की। यह 'लीडरशिप' का उदाहरण है—नेता केवल आदेश नहीं देता, बल्कि साथ मिलकर कार्य भी करता है। एक हजार वर्षों के श्रम के बाद 'आयुर्वेदमयः पुमान्' (धन्वंतरि) का प्रकट होना यह बताता है कि स्वास्थ्य और चिकित्सा (आयुर्वेद) जीवन के सबसे अनमोल रत्नों में से एक है। अमृत (मोक्ष) से पहले स्वास्थ्य (जीवन रक्षा) का आना आवश्यक है।
