Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
गता भगवती रात्रिः श्रोतव्यम् परमम् श्रुतम् ।
तराम सरितम् श्रेष्टम् पुण्यम् त्रि पथ गाम् नदीम् ॥१-४५-६॥
gatā bhagavatī rātriḥ śrotavyam paramam śrutam |
tarāma saritam śreṣṭam puṇyam tri patha gām nadīm ॥1-45-6॥
Translation
"The divine night has passed, and we have heard that which is supremely worthy of being heard. Let us now cross the best of rivers, the holy river that flows through three paths."

(राम कहते हैं) "भगवती रात्रि बीत चुकी है और जो परम श्रवण योग्य कथा थी, वह हमने सुन ली है। अब हम इस सरिता-श्रेष्ठ, पवित्र, तीन पथों पर चलने वाली नदी (गंगा) को पार करें।"
English Commentary
Rama respectfully signals readiness to move. He refers to the night as Bhagavati (divine) because it was spent in holy communion. He acknowledges the completion of the learning phase: 'We have heard the supreme thing to be heard.' Now, he suggests action: crossing the river. He describes Ganga as Tripathagam (Tri-path-goer), referring to her flow through Heaven, Earth, and the Netherworld—a direct reference to the story he just heard. This shows Rama's eagerness to continue the mission and his readiness to cross the physical barrier of the river now that he understands its spiritual significance.

राम अब यात्रा पुनः आरंभ करने का प्रस्ताव रखते हैं। रात्रि को 'भगवती' (पूजनीय/दिव्य) कहा गया है क्योंकि वह सत्संग में बीती। राम कहते हैं कि 'श्रोतव्यम् परमम् श्रुतम्' (जो सबसे श्रेष्ठ सुनने योग्य था, वह सुन लिया)—अर्थात गंगा की कथा से बढ़कर कुछ नहीं था। अब कर्म (यात्रा) का समय है। वे गंगा को 'त्रिपथगाम्' (तीन मार्गों—स्वर्ग, पृथ्वी, पाताल—में जाने वाली) कहते हैं। यह विशेषण गंगा की सर्वव्यापकता और कल ही सुनी गई कथा (भगीरथ का प्रयास) की स्मृति दिलाता है। राम यहाँ एक सक्रिय नायक (proactive hero) के रूप में दिखते हैं जो गुरु को आगे की यात्रा के लिए प्रेरित कर रहे हैं।
