हतेषु तेषु पुत्रेषु दितिः परम दुःखिता ।
मारीचम् काश्यपम् राम भर्तारम् इदम् अब्रवीत् ॥ ॥१-४६-१॥
hateṣu teṣu putreṣu ditiḥ parama duḥkhitā |
mārīcam kāśyapam rāma bhartāram idam abravīt ॥1-46-1॥
Translation
O Rama! When her sons were thus killed, Diti was stricken with supreme grief. She spoke these words to her husband, Kashyapa, the son of Marichi.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे राम! अपने उन पुत्रों के मारे जाने पर दिति परम दुखी हुईं। उन्होंने अपने पति, मरीचि-नंदन कश्यप से यह वचन कहा।
English Commentary
The narrative shifts from cosmic war to personal grief. Diti, the mother of the slain Asuras, is consumed by sorrow (parama duhkhita). She approaches her husband Kashyapa (son of Marichi), who is the father of both the victors (Devas) and the vanquished (Asuras). This creates a complex familial dynamic. Diti’s grief sets the stage for the birth of the Maruts, showing how every end (the war) plants the seed for a new beginning (Diti's new penance).

यहाँ से एक नया संघर्ष आरंभ होता है। एक माँ (दिति) का अपने पुत्रों के विनाश पर शोक उसे प्रतिशोध की ओर ले जाता है। 'परम दुःखिता' दिति की मनःस्थिति का वर्णन करता है। वह अपने पति कश्यप (जो देवताओं और असुरों दोनों के पिता हैं) के पास जाती है, जो यह दर्शाता है कि वह न्याय या प्रतिशोध के लिए सर्वोच्च प्राधिकारी के पास गई। यह वाल्मीकि की मानवीय भावनाओं को चित्रित करने की कला है—असुर माता भी पुत्र-शोक में उतनी ही व्याकुल होती है जितनी कोई और।
